FAQ About Invisalign
Invisalign is a popular alternative treatment to traditional metal braces. With Invisalign, we can treat dental alignment issues, improving the quality of your smile as well as your oral health. Instead of brackets and wires, Invisalign uses clear plastic aligners to achieve these goals. Shenandoah Family Dentistry is proud to provide this incredible treatment, and we are here to answer any questions that you might have about it.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic aligners to correct the alignment of your teeth. The aligners are made to be worn for two weeks at a time. These aligners work to gently widen the periodontal ligaments around your teeth. The teeth then become loose and can be guided into proper alignment. They then help to stabilize your teeth in their new positions. Your Invisalign aligners are removable but should be worn for 20 to 22 hours each day to achieve optimal results.
Am I a Candidate?
A consultation is necessary to determine if you are a candidate for Invisalign. While this treatment is effective for many common alignment issues, it is not right for everyone. Invisalign cannot treat more significant alignment issues or shift the alignment of your jaw. These issues often require traditional orthodontics. In some cases, it may be possible to begin treatment with braces but finish with Invisalign after the more significant issues have been resolved, shortening the amount of time you spend in braces.
How Do You Make My Aligners?
Your aligners are created from digital impressions of your mouth. Specialized software allows us to create aligners that will provide you with the best results possible. The software also allows us to see every step of your treatment, including what your smile will look like once treatment is over. Your aligners are made from a clear thermoplastic material that sits over your teeth much like a whitening tray or mouth guard.
Do My Aligners Need Special Care?
Your aligners do require care. Taking care of your aligners is essential for getting rid of plaque, bacteria, and other debris that accumulate in them during the day. Cleaning your aligners is quite simple. You can purchase a cleaning kit through the Invisalign website. You may also clean your aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
The exact length of your treatment depends on several factors. These factors include your age, the severity of your alignment issues, your oral hygiene, and your commitment to your treatment. On average, treatment takes between 9 and 15 months to complete. Many patients achieve results in less than a year, but some may require up to 2 years.
What Happens After My Treatment is Over?
Once your Invisalign treatment is over, you will be provided with a custom retainer. This retainer functions to help maintain your results, preventing your teeth from shifting out of alignment again. It is important that you wear your aligners as recommended.
Will Insurance Cover Invisalign?
Coverage for Invisalign varies between different dental insurance companies. In many cases, if an insurance company provides coverage for orthodontic treatment, they will also provide some sort of coverage for Invisalign. Not all insurance providers cover orthodontics, however. Review your specific coverage or contact your insurance provider for more details.
