At Shenandoah Family Dentistry we understand that the right veneers quickly lead to a beautiful smile. This is great for anyone whose teeth have stains, chips, or gaps in them. However, you must understand that veneers are an irreversible treatment, which is why they’re such a big decision for which you’ll need to have all the right information.
What Veneers Are
The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) says veneers are a "thin piece of porcelain used to re-create the natural look of teeth, while also providing strength and resilience comparable to natural tooth enamel." They’re custom made to contour to your unique smile then bonded to your tooth’s original enamel. This occurs over the course of several visits to our office.
Typically, these are made from porcelain, but Lumineers and composite resin are also used sometimes. These will last for 10–20 years and cost between $800–$2,00 per tooth. Since these are a major expense, you should keep in mind that they’ll eventually need to be replaced.
Why Choose Veneers
Veneers aren’t as intrusive as crowns or braces. This is why they’re often used to close gaps and correct small misalignments. Sometimes they’re used as a cosmetic solution when you want brighter, straighter teeth.
Understanding the Procedure
Your veneers will take two appointments unless it’s prefabricated in the laboratory beforehand. During these procedures, we focus on properly placing the veneers in your mouth. Typically, you won’t need any anesthesia. However, if you’re sensitive to dental work, it can be an option.
We’ll start by cleaning your teeth and determining the right shade for your veneers. It’s important to remove a really small amount of enamel, so there’s room to put the veneer in your mouth. An impression of your tooth is also needed for the lab. Once these procedures are complete, we’ll use spot etching to place a temporary veneer on your tooth.
Once we receive your veneers from the lab, we’ll remove your temporary veneer and clean your tooth using a combination of pumice and water. We’ll etch the veneer, rinse it thoroughly with water, and air dry it. As it dries, we’ll place adhesive and cement on your tooth. Your veneer is then placed, and we make sure that it fits and is contoured properly. Once everything is correct, your veneer is light cured for 60 seconds, after which we remove excess material and polish the veneer.
You can schedule a follow-up appointment with our office to make sure that your veneer fits comfortably. This is the key to it lasting a long time. Properly caring for your veneer also helps here.
