Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a procedure used to treat periodontal disease—commonly known as gum disease. Scaling is the part of the treatment that uses a thin and sharp instrument that fits between the teeth and gums to remove any plaque or tarter that has built up below the gum line. Root planing refers to smoothing the root’s surface so that the gum tissue can grow and reattach itself back to the teeth. Plaque and tarter cause a rough and irregular surface that attracts and holds the bacteria that causes gum disease and leads to the receding of the gum line, increase in pocket size and ultimately tooth and bone loss. The main purpose of scaling and root planing is to cure you of the infection by leaving your tooth and root’s surface smooth to help keep more plaque and bacteria build up at bay and restore your dental health.

While scaling and root planing are not extremely painful they can cause discomfort for some patients. A local anesthetic is used to numb the area for treatment so that the discomfort is minimal or none at all. If your gum disease is still in the early stages then there is a very good chance that scaling and/or root planing is the only periodontal treatment that you will need along with regular cleanings and check ups. If on the other hand your gum disease is in the advanced stages, then scaling and root planing will likely be the first step in your treatment, followed by surgery to pull your gum tissue away from the tooth in order for the dentist to be able to perform a thorough cleaning of the deep pockets beneath your gum line. If that’s the case for you then you can speak to your dentist about what to expect from the surgery as well as the option of sedation as opposed to just a numbing agent.

Scaling and root planing may not be the most pleasant of the dental procedures that you may have over the course of your life, but it is absolutely necessary if you have diseased gums. Since periodontal disease can spread to the bone that surrounds your teeth and then to your bloodstream, getting treatment as soon as possible is important to keep it from damaging other parts of your body such as your heart. It has been proven that gum disease and gingivitis puts you at an increased risk of having a heart attack, heart disease and more. This isn’t just a dental health issue but a medical one as well. For overall good health you need to do what you must to get your gum disease under control. It won’t just save your smile but it could also ultimately save your life. So be sure to speak to the dentist about any concerns that you may have and make arrangements to start treating your gum disease before it’s too late. Prevention will go a long way in protecting your dental and medical health.
