Sealants

Sealants used to be used only in children but are now also being used in adults. Dental sealants are a clear coating that is placed onto the surface of the teeth that you use to chew. Since most of us use our molars to do our chewing that is where the sealants are commonly used. The molars have several grooves along the top and these grooves have a tendency to collect bits of food that can be a pain to get out with brushing alone. Since food particles tend to build up in the molars, they are the teeth most susceptible to cavities and that’s where the sealants come in. The sealants fill the gaps so that you have a smoother surface that doesn’t hold in food particles so that you are far less likely to get cavities in those teeth.

Before sealants are put on the teeth your dentist will want to do a good cleaning to make sure that they have a nice clean surface that is free of debris to apply the sealant to. Once the cleaning is complete the dentist will then dry the teeth thoroughly because the sealant won’t stick to the teeth if they are not completely dry. The drying is done using a little air drying tool as well as cotton. A suction hose is usually also used during the procedure to help keep the teeth dry. Next, the dentist or sometimes the dental hygienist will brush a special liquid on the teeth to make the surface a little rough s that the sealant has something to better grab on to. Finally, the dentist will fill the gaps with the sealant and shine an intense light on to the sealant which will harden it so that it adheres to the teeth and becomes sturdy enough that you can eat as usual.

Sealants are a great tool in preventative dental care and can help keep your teeth healthy by preventing cavities in the teeth you have sealed. The procedure is quick and painless and doesn’t interfere with any of your regular activities including eating and drinking. Dental sealants can last for up to 10 years which makes them well worth the minimal time and money spent to have them done. This doesn’t mean of course that you can forgo regular dental care and avoid cavities! In order to keep from getting cavities and protect the health of your teeth and gums you still need to keep up with regular check ups, brushing after meals and flossing every day. As great as sealants can be in protecting your teeth they are by no means a replacement for proper dental care.

Your dentist may recommend sealants for you or your child if there are any problems keeping the teeth properly brushed or if the beginning stages of a cavity is suspected. Talk to your dentist to see if sealants are a good choice for you or a loved on and make the most of this excellent preventative tool that can help keep your teeth healthy simply and without any discomfort.
